I'm glad they were also able to help you. Letting go seems to be the hardest thing to do, but I am finding it is bringing me the greatest joy. Love you doll! Hope you have many more months and years of inner peace and joy!! <3Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6972661907029038524.post-86413879721071463192010-02-09T09:09:37.633-07:002010-02-09T09:09:37.633-07:00Amen to what Scott said. It represents my worth.

This is something that has bothered me a bit for a long time, and that has really bothered me as I've gotten a closer glimpse of it over the last several months:

It's very difficult to separate "worthiness" from "worth", and being told that you aren't worthy of something (a temple recommend, etc.) can easily be seen as a reflection on your worth as a person.

In truth, according to our doctrine, none of us is "worthy" to enter the temple on our own (we have all sinned, an no unclean thing can enter His presence), and all of us are "worthy" as we apply the Atonement in our lives.

But because there have been (fairly arbitrary) guidelines set out to determine who can and cannot enter, there is a clear demarcation between the "worthy" and the "unworthy"--and it becomes easy for the person who enjoys their coffee or cannot muster the faith to pay a full tithe to feel "less than" because they have been declared "less worthy" than their neighbor, who may have their own list of sins that simply aren't on the list of recommend questions.

(It gets even worse when each local leader has his own interpretation of what the questions mean, so members who behave in identical fashion may have their worthiness determined strictly by their geographical location--but perhaps I oughtn't go there).

I hope that Sarah (and everyone else) realizes that a priesthood leader has no say in how much you are worth to God--and that you are of inestimable worth, regardless of whether or not you hold the little piece of paper that says you're "worthy".Scotthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15332275934258698026noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6972661907029038524.post-24887204876508017932010-02-07T12:19:41.272-07:002010-02-07T12:19:41.272-07:00I'm just so glad that you are finding some pea...I'm just so glad that you are finding some peace. And thanks for posting the Joseph Campbell quote -- I really needed to hear that! Alan is quite right speaking of the Mormon 'track'. Those quotes are perfect and are perfectly true. Joseph Campbell and Lao Tze were so right. Growing up in the Church seems to put us all on one officially approved railroad track and we freeze in fear when we think about anything different, even if we can't deny our hearts saying something different. But I'm persuaded that the railroad track is the institutional church's creation, not an inevitable result of living the gospel. When I was finally able to separate the church and its culture from the gospel (something my former bishop said was a crucial realization) I became a lot happier. SO glad you are feeling better.Robhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02992194211469009236noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6972661907029038524.post-32653368980910942412010-02-07T10:03:17.527-07:002010-02-07T10:03:17.527-07:00Sarah as I read this I am in tears. I have tried so hard to let go and I can't. It would make my life so much easier if I could. I love you and I hope this helps with your stress and hope to see you soon.

Love MichaelMichaelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06523056467481705550noreply@blogger.com
